RSPB Newport Playground: Phase 2

Project Brief: In 2008 we installed phase 1 of the playground for the RSPB Newport wetland centre , building a lighthouse centrepiece with a slide, ladder, sliding pole, climbing wall and internal staircase - a copy of the real lighthouse just over the sea wall. We also constructed a safety fence and gates around the play area. The brief for phase 2 was to complete the playground with further themed items of play, swings and seating.

Oak see-saw

In 2009 we returned to install phase 2, which comprised 3 springies, an industrial themed aerial runway (zip wire), a see-saw, swings, migration post, flying swan and a second major piece, a container ship with climbing nets, slide, climbing wall, decks, gangways and swing bars. We also constructed hardwood board walks, dipping platforms, picnic area and a large (and very heavy) swan seat.

This playground reflects the character of the local area, is unique and being the product of the foresight of the staff at the RSPB wetlands centre, is an invaluable asset and a wonderful draw for families. We have yet to receive feedback on visitor numbers, but, as with Croft Castle (The National Trust) we expect a dramatic increase in visitors, many of whom will be drawn in by this wonderful, memorable and unique playground.
